Day hike Cusco nearby ruins
At 8:00 a.m. we pick up from your hotel to travel by bus for a 20 minute ride to Tambo Machay Incan ruins outside of Cusco. Here we leave the bus to hike our way back to Cusco while visiting all the archeological sites on the way. We visit Tambo Machay: A fascinating water fountain surrounded by high quality stone walls with continuously running water since the Inca times. A short walk from Tambo Machay will take us to the strategically located Puca Pucara fortress overlooking the entrance from the east to the Cusco area. After a visit to the site we continue on a gentle hike to Q’enko: An intricate possible ceremonial center inside a large rock with carved figures, seats and passages that give you a feeling of being a mysterious place filled with symbolism. From here we hike for about 20 minutes to our lunch spot near the most important archeological site of the region, located two kilometers from the city of Cusco, named “Sacsayhuaman”.
The Sacsayhuaman complex shows immense walls made up of huge stones distributed in a zigzag pattern in three platforms with an average of 1,181ft in length. These platforms are connected by flights of stairs and doorways also in stone; one of these is 29ft tall and 15ft wide and weighs more than 100 tons. Inca Pachacuti employed 20,000 men for the construction of the complex and it took approximately 50 years to complete.
After visiting this amazing site we will hike down to our hotel in the city and enjoy the rest of the afternoon at leisure. Picnic Lunch
